EDNEY L. FREEMAN

Artist | Cultural Storyteller | Caribbean Heritage Preserver

Edney L. Freeman is a visual storyteller whose work captures the vibrant soul of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Deeply inspired by the traditions of the Mocko Jumbies—towering stilt dancers rooted in African heritage—Freeman’s art brings Caribbean folklore, history, and identity to life with vivid color and emotional depth. As both a artist, sculptor and cultural ambassador, he documents the resilience and beauty of island life, using his bronze artworks to honor ancestral wisdom and inspire future generations.

His acclaimed series on Mocko Jumbies has been exhibited internationally and locally, drawing attention to the spiritual and cultural significance of these iconic Carnival figures. Freeman’s work blends traditional techniques with contemporary perspectives, making him a powerful voice in Caribbean visual arts.

Whether featured in galleries or educational forums, Freeman’s art is a bridge between past and present, celebration and contemplation.

Made in the Caribbean

Edney's sculptures are 100% proudly made in his on-island studio and cast by Industrial Art Heritage Foundry, a leading Caribbean art foundry established since 1982.

Limited Edition Sculptures

Made Using the 'Lost-Wax' Art Casting Process

The lost wax casting process, also known as "Cire Perdue," is an ancient sculpting method used by modern-day artists like Edney L. Freeman to bring detailed bronze forms to life.

It begins with a wax model meticulously shaped by hand, which is then encased in a ceramic mold. Once the mold is fired, the wax melts and drains away, leaving a hollow cavity that captures every contour of the original design. In the next phase, molten bronze is poured into the mold, filling the space once occupied by wax. Once cooled, the shell is carefully removed, and the sculpture is cleaned, patinated, and finished with great care. Each piece is not only a technical feat but a tribute to Caribbean culture and legacy.

Edney’s sculptures are proudly crafted in the Caribbean by Industrial Art Heritage Foundry (IAHF), a leading art foundry established in 1982 in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. This family-owned foundry was specially trained by renowned U.S. master sculptor Michael Maiden—an official licensed Disney artist for their collectible sculpture series. His other desktop and monumental bronze artworks are also prominently featured in Vatican City (The Holy See), the United States Congress, The White House, the Royal Palace of Madrid, and numerous other public spaces and private collections.

Embracing Heritage Through Sculpture

My artistic journey has always been deeply intertwined with the rich cultural tapestry of the US Virgin Islands. One of my earliest and most cherished memories is attending a carnival in St. Thomas as a young child, perched on my uncle’s shoulders, captivated by the towering Mocko Jumbie performers. That moment ignited a lifelong passion to celebrate and preserve our heritage through art.

Honoring Culture and Traditions

I find fulfillment in sculpting pieces that honor the culture and traditions of the US Virgin Islands. One of my most meaningful works, Mocko Jumbie Jamboree by the Sea, stands proudly at Yacht Haven Grande in St. Thomas—a tribute to the enduring spirit of the Mocko Jumbie and the rich cultural heritage of our islands. Through my work, I aim to celebrate history, inspire community pride, and bring to life the stories that connect us all.
